lyrics

The storms almost here
The flowers are gone
It’s too cold for the last day of may
Swirling fog near the ground
Like a fallen night gown
Its pretty how your face has changed

Leaves live short lives
The ground must seem warm
A branch a cold place to be
How do they know
Its time to let go
When I know will you let go of me?

We watch Boy scouts in brown
Taking tents down
Tents that men then take away
There’s room in your pocket
For both of ours hands
We stand and we wait for the rain

The lights along the drive
One by one come alive
We say things we don’t need to say
There’s fog or there’s smoke
Round the hill of three oaks
Their shadows an auction of slaves

Boys with their bugles
And young men with guns
Statues that no one wants made
A Snapping flag flies
against the bruised sky
There’s no good way to end a parade
